Shenzhen travel guide

Shenzhen is not a sightseeing city in the classical sense — it is a working city that happens to have excellent parks, a design scene and the most convenient land border to Hong Kong in China. It is also the most forgiving place to arrive if you are nervous about China, because almost everything is new and signposted.

  • Best time: October–March (summers are hot and wet)
  • Suggested stay: 2–3 days

Getting around

  • Metro — Clean, cheap, extensive, and the signage is fully bilingual. Activate Shenzhen separately in your transport app.
  • DiDi — Cheap and fast; the city is wide, so use it for anything over two metro stops at night.
  • Walking — Districts are large and separated by highways. Walking works inside a district, not between them.
  • To Hong Kong — Cross at Futian or Luohu by metro; Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau are the rail crossings. Bring your passport and expect a queue on weekends.
