Payment, Transport & Survival Guide
Save YOUR country's number before you travel. Consulates in Shanghai/Guangzhou/Chengdu have different numbers.
Numbers verified Oct 2024 — always double-check on your embassy's official site.
Common causes: (1) your bank blocks 3-D Secure from China — call your bank; (2) some Visa cards fail while Mastercard works (or vice versa) — try the other network; (3) one card can only be linked to ONE Alipay account ever — if it was used before, that's why. Workaround: have a friend send you a small red packet and pay from balance.
It depends on your SIM: (1) International roaming eSIM / your home SIM roaming → traffic exits via your home carrier, so Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube all work WITHOUT a VPN. (2) A local Chinese SIM or hotel Wi-Fi → those apps are blocked, you need a VPN installed BEFORE arrival. Most travelers pick the roaming eSIM for this reason — see the Cards tab.
Yes — DiDi's international version accepts Visa/Mastercard/PayPal. Register with your foreign number + email. At airports, follow the '网约车' (ride-hail) signs to the pickup zone. Street taxis: always ask for the meter (打表); if the driver refuses, walk away or say '我要报警了' (see SOS).
Three ways: (1) 12306 app — register with passport, one-time online verification takes up to 24h, do it before your trip; (2) Trip.com — easiest for foreigners, small booking fee; (3) station ticket window with your physical passport. Boarding: use the manual gate with your passport, no paper ticket needed.
Tap water: NO — drink bottled water (all convenience stores sell it) or boiled water; hotels provide a kettle. Toilets: many public toilets are squat-style — carry tissue paper, as it's often not provided. Malls and hotels usually have Western toilets.
Power: 220V, sockets are Type A (flat), C (round) and I — most phone/laptop chargers work with a simple adapter, no converter needed. Tipping: NOT expected anywhere in China — restaurants, taxis, hotels. Don't tip, it causes confusion.
